Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

HBOT and PEMF therapy at Progressive Medical Center in Atlanta. Pressurized oxygen for accelerated healing, tissue repair, and recovery from chronic and complex conditions.

You have been through a protocol, a surgery, a treatment cycle, or a chronic illness that has left your body struggling to recover the way it used to. Oxygen is the raw material your cells need to repair, rebuild, and restore. When circulation is compromised or inflammation is persistent, the tissues that need oxygen most are the ones getting the least. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy puts oxygen back where your body cannot send it on its own. Call (770) 676-6000 to schedule a consultation.

Oxygen at the Cellular Level

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Your body heals with oxygen. Every cell depends on it for energy, repair, and recovery. But when illness, injury, or chronic inflammation restricts blood flow, oxygen delivery to the tissues that need it most can fall short.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) changes that equation. Inside a pressurized chamber, you breathe concentrated oxygen at levels significantly higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This floods the bloodstream with oxygen, saturating plasma and reaching tissues that compromised circulation cannot. The result is accelerated healing, reduced inflammation, and restored cellular function in areas where the body has been struggling to recover on its own.

At Progressive Medical Center in Atlanta, HBOT is part of our integrative treatment approach for patients dealing with chronic illness, neurological conditions, post-surgical recovery, and complex cases where the body needs a direct boost in its capacity to heal.

How It Works

Pressurized Healing, One Session at a Time

During a hyperbaric oxygen session, you lie comfortably inside a specialized chamber while the air pressure is gradually increased to approximately 1.3 to 2.0 times normal atmospheric pressure. At this pressure, you breathe concentrated oxygen that dissolves directly into your blood plasma at levels far beyond what normal breathing can achieve.

This oxygen-rich plasma reaches every tissue in the body, including areas with reduced blood flow or damaged vasculature. Once there, the elevated oxygen levels stimulate the production of new blood vessels, accelerate tissue repair, reduce swelling, and support the immune system. Sessions typically last about 60 minutes, and most patients read, rest, or sleep during the treatment.

The chamber environment is calm and controlled. Your care team monitors the session from start to finish, adjusting pressure gradually so the experience is comfortable throughout. Many patients describe it as one of the most relaxing parts of their treatment schedule.

Why HBOT

What Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Can Do

By delivering oxygen at levels far beyond what normal breathing provides, HBOT activates multiple healing pathways throughout the body.

Accelerated Tissue Repair

Oxygen-rich plasma promotes the growth of new blood vessels and stimulates collagen production, accelerating the body's ability to repair damaged tissue. This makes HBOT particularly valuable for wound healing, post-surgical recovery, and patients whose healing has stalled under conventional treatment.

Reduced Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a driver of nearly every complex condition PMC treats. HBOT helps regulate the inflammatory response by improving oxygen delivery to inflamed tissues, supporting the body's ability to calm the cycle of damage and repair that keeps patients stuck.

Neurological Support

The brain is the body's most oxygen-demanding organ. HBOT has been used to support patients with neurological conditions by improving oxygen delivery to brain tissue, promoting neuroplasticity, and supporting cognitive function. Patients dealing with memory loss, brain fog, and post-concussion symptoms often benefit from this targeted oxygenation.

Immune System Enhancement

Oxygen fuels the immune system's ability to fight infection and clear damaged cells. Under pressurized conditions, white blood cells become more active and effective. For patients dealing with chronic infections, autoimmune challenges, or recovering from illness, HBOT provides the immune system with the fuel it needs to do its job.

Cellular Energy and Anti-Aging

HBOT stimulates the production of mitochondria inside cells, the structures responsible for generating cellular energy. Increased mitochondrial activity means cells perform at a higher level, which is why HBOT has gained attention for its role in longevity and anti-aging. Cells saturated with oxygen function, recover, and regenerate more effectively.

Enhanced Treatment Synergy

HBOT amplifies the effectiveness of other therapies in your treatment plan. By improving circulation and tissue oxygenation, it helps therapeutic agents delivered through IV therapy, peptide protocols, and other modalities reach their targets more effectively. At PMC, HBOT is rarely used alone. It works as part of a coordinated, multi-therapy strategy.

Advanced Combination

HBOT Combined with PEMF Therapy

Progressive Medical Center also offers PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy combined with hyperbaric oxygen, creating a treatment that goes beyond what either therapy achieves alone. Most hyperbaric providers in Atlanta do not offer this combination.

PEMF uses targeted electromagnetic pulses to stimulate cellular repair, improve microcirculation, and reduce pain and inflammation. When delivered alongside pressurized oxygen, the two therapies complement each other: PEMF improves blood flow at the capillary level, enhancing the delivery of oxygen to tissues. Meanwhile, the elevated oxygen accelerates the cellular repair that PEMF initiates.

Research on PEMF therapy has demonstrated effectiveness for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, depression, and tissue healing. Combined with HBOT, patients may experience faster recovery, deeper anti-inflammatory effects, and improved outcomes for bone and soft tissue repair. Your provider will determine whether the PEMF combination is appropriate for your treatment plan.

Who Can Benefit

Conditions That Respond to Hyperbaric Oxygen

HBOT is one of the most broadly applicable therapies in integrative medicine. Because oxygen is fundamental to every healing process in the body, the range of conditions that benefit from enhanced oxygenation is wide.

Your HBOT Experience

What to Expect

From your initial consultation through your treatment sessions, here is what the process looks like at Progressive Medical Center.

1

Consultation and Evaluation

Your provider reviews your health history, current diagnoses, and treatment goals to determine whether HBOT is appropriate for your situation. Because HBOT works best as part of a broader treatment plan, your doctor will evaluate how it fits alongside your other therapies and diagnostics. The consultation covers your full clinical picture so your care team can build a plan around what your body actually needs. Pricing is reviewed during your consultation.

2

Preparation

Before your first session, your care team walks you through what to expect inside the chamber, how the pressure will feel, and how to communicate with the team during the session. You are asked to wear comfortable clothing and avoid certain substances beforehand. The chamber is prepared, and your baseline vitals are taken.

3

The HBOT Session

You lie comfortably inside the hyperbaric chamber while the pressure is gradually increased. The chamber is well-lit, spacious enough to stretch out, and designed so you stay in constant communication with your care team throughout the session. Patients concerned about enclosed spaces are often surprised by how open the chamber feels once inside. Over the course of approximately 60 minutes, concentrated oxygen saturates your body down to the blood plasma and tissue level. Most patients read, rest, or fall asleep during the session. Pressure changes are gradual, and if you experience any ear pressure (similar to an airplane descent), your team adjusts accordingly.

4

Post-Session and Ongoing Care

After the session, the pressure is brought back to normal gradually. Most patients feel relaxed and can resume normal activities immediately. Some experience a temporary boost in energy or clarity. Your provider tracks your response across sessions and adjusts the frequency and number of treatments based on how your body is responding. Lab work and functional diagnostics help measure progress over time.

The Difference

Clinical HBOT vs. Mild Hyperbaric Chambers

Not all hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the same. Consumer-grade "mild" chambers and clinical-grade HBOT differ significantly in pressure, oxygen concentration, and medical oversight.

Mild / At-Home Chambers

  • Operate at low pressure (1.3 ATA or less)
  • Ambient air or low-concentration oxygen
  • No medical monitoring during use
  • Limited oxygen delivery to deep tissues
  • Self-directed sessions without clinical guidance
  • Not part of a coordinated treatment plan

Clinical HBOT at PMC

  • Operates at 1.3 to 2.0+ ATA with precise pressure control
  • 100% concentrated oxygen delivery
  • Medically supervised with real-time monitoring
  • Deep tissue and plasma saturation for systemic healing
  • Prescribed protocol based on diagnostics and treatment goals
  • Integrated with IV therapy, PEMF, and full care team
Common Questions

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy FAQ

What does it feel like inside the hyperbaric chamber?

Most patients describe the experience as calm and comfortable. The chamber is well-lit and spacious enough to lie down and relax. As pressure increases, you may feel mild pressure in your ears, similar to the sensation during an airplane descent. Your care team shows you simple techniques to equalize the pressure, and adjustments are made gradually to keep you comfortable. Most patients read, listen to music, or sleep during the session.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?

Yes. HBOT has been used in clinical settings for decades, including in hospital burn units and wound care centers. At PMC, sessions are medically supervised with real-time monitoring of pressure levels and your comfort throughout. Side effects are rare and generally mild, such as temporary ear pressure or light fatigue. Your provider evaluates your health history before recommending HBOT to ensure it is appropriate for your situation.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your condition, your treatment goals, and how your body responds. Some patients benefit from a concentrated series of sessions over a few weeks. Others with ongoing conditions receive HBOT periodically as part of a longer treatment plan. Your doctor determines the recommended frequency and number of sessions based on your diagnostic results and clinical progress.

How long is each session?

A typical HBOT session at PMC lasts approximately 60 minutes at therapeutic pressure, with additional time for gradual pressurization and depressurization. Plan for about 75 to 90 minutes total from arrival to completion. You can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

What is PEMF therapy and how does it work with HBOT?

PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy uses gentle electromagnetic pulses to stimulate cellular repair, improve microcirculation, and reduce pain and inflammation. When combined with HBOT, the two therapies amplify each other: PEMF enhances blood flow at the capillary level so more oxygen reaches your tissues, while HBOT provides the concentrated oxygen that fuels the cellular repair PEMF initiates. Progressive Medical Center is one of the few practices in Atlanta offering this combined approach.
